Digital Directions Pilot Seminar, June 24-29, 2001

Digital Directions, a program jointly sponsored by the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH) and the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Maryland, is a challenging summer seminar for high school students. Digital Directions shows the relevance of the arts and humanities in and to the online world, exploring the connections between music, art, writing, reading, and technology. As part of the curriculum, students will learn:

  • HTML, web design, and multimedia skills
  • How to search and use the Internet effectively
  • How to evaluate web content critically
  • Internet ethics
  • How to create on-line, digital projects in an arts and humanities field of study of their own choosing

The seminar will also feature:

  • Career panel on arts, humanities, and technology
  • Instructors with state-of-the-art technology skills
  • Guest speakers
  • Field trip to DigiLab at the Smithsonian's Museum of American History
  • The outstanding resources of the University of Maryland
  • An exciting pre-college experience

George Williams

Dr. Williams is an Associate Professor of English at the University of South Carolina Upstate where he has led a research project on accessible website development. His research and teaching interests include eighteenth-century studies, orality & literacy, the digital humanities, and disability studies in the humanities. He is a regular contributor to Profhacker.com, BrailleSC.org, and EighteenthCentury.org.

Catherine Hays Zabriskie

Catherine Hays Zabriskie is the Associate Director of Academic Technology for the College of Arts and Humanities. She supports ARHU faculty in their use of technology in teaching and research. Catherine coordinates the College's Digital Technology in the Arts and Humanities learning opportunities for faculty. In addition, Catherine is available to meet with faculty for individual project consulting and software tutoring. She coordinates the Undergraduate Technology Apprenticeship program for the College as well as other projects such as the Visual Literacy Toolbox.
